Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp

So....when I think of fall, I think of warm apples. I thought about doing an apple pie, but I wasn't sure how I would do with making the crust, so I decided to try an apple crisp instead, from Ina Garten (http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/old-fashioned-apple-crisp-recipe/index.html).

Ingredients

5 lbs McIntosh or Macoun apples ( I used Gala apples b/c that's what I could find at the store)

grated zest of 1 orange

grated zest of 1 lemon

2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed orange juice

2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice

1/2 cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the topping:

1 1/2 cups flour

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup light brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup oatmeal

1/2 lb cold unsalted butter, diced

Directions (adapted from http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/old-fashioned-apple-crisp-recipe/index.html)

 1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and butter a 9x 14 x 2 in oval baking dish. ( I ended up using a medium sized rectangular glass dish and a glass pie plan.)

2. Peel, core, and cut apples into large pieces. Combine the apples with zests, juices, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl. Pour into the baking dish(es).

3. To make the topping, combine flour, sugars, salt, oatmeal, and cold butter in a bowl. Stir everything together and mash the butter until the pieces are as small as peas. Scatter the topping over the apples.

4. Place the baking dish on top of a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour or until the top is brown and the apples are bubbly.
